"The Trellis Wire", 201's periodical newsletter designed to keep you up-to-date with our latest news and special offers.

In this issue:-

Geoff Schippers & Barbara Smith
201 awarded 93 points and 4 stars by James Halliday

James Halliday, one of Australia's most respected wine critics, released his much anticipated 2013 Wine Companion last week (yes, in July 2012!) and it made for exciting reading for us at 201.

The first of two pleasant surprises was being awarded a massive 93 points for our 2011 Semillon - our highest score yet. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of trying it yet, James tasting notes are:-

"Pale, bright straw-green; has all the hallmarks of high quality, young semillon, with a bouquet that is already expressive, the palate likewise; the flavours are in the Meyer lemon spectrum, gaining depth from lemongrass at one extreme, grapefruit at the other. The slightly higher than usual alcohol does help fill out the flavour. Drinking to 2021."

And secondly, the latest edition also saw 201 promoted from 3-star status to a 4-star winery for the first time in our short history. Defined as a "very good producer of wines with class and character", our new rating represents a significant jump in a single vintage not to mention a fantastic achievement in just our third vintage.

In keeping with the Olympic theme, 201 wins Gold

The Olympics has a tendency to bring out the inner athlete in all of us but you can imagine our surprise when, sitting on the couch late one night (glass of wine and chocolate in hand), we received the fantastic news that we'd won our first ever Gold medal!

Our 2011 Durif was awarded a career-high 55.5 points (out of 60) by the Cowra Wine Show judges and in the process became the highest-scoring wine in it's class! The achievement follows hot on the heels of two more recent successes at the Winewise Small Vigneron's Awards where both the 2011 Chambourcin and 2011 Durif picked up Bronze medals in their respective classes.

At this rate we'll be giving the Aussies in London a run for their money!

2012 Semi Semi officially released

With our change of winemaker in vintage 2012, we've put a contemporary spin on classic Hunter Valley Semillon to create a new wine for our portfolio.

201's Semi Semi is a semi-dry Semillon which sits somewhere in between a dry table wine and a dessert wine. Our estate-grown Semillon grapes are harvested early to preserve their racy acidity, pressed gently and then only partially fermented to produce a wine with lower alcohol (8.8%) and higher residual sweetness. The palate is crisp and refreshing with punchy flavours of pear, lime and grapefruit - in fact, some have even likened it to pear cider for those of you who have an inclination towards that kind of tipple.

The acidity and flavour of this wine makes it an ideal aperitif, or accompaniment for a cheese plate and spicy dishes such as Thai or Indian.

Special pre-release of our 2011 Sparkling Semillon

It's still some time off yet but we're excited to announce that we will be pre-releasing a small quantity of our 2011 Sparkling Semillon in late 2012.

Made using the traditional "Methode Champenoise", only 1000 litres of it have been produced with the intention of leaving it on lees for two years or more to develop a more rich and complex palate. Nevertheless, we've made a small exception and plan to disgorge a small amount in time for the 201 Club's Spring 2012 Winemaker's Selection.

If you would like to be one of the lucky few to sample this very limited pre-release, join the 201 Club before 30/09/2012 and keep a close eye on the mail around late October!
