2013 Semillon one of NSW's "Top Wines" 28th October 2013
Whilst the final judging is a week away, 201's 2013 Semillon has been named on the list of NSW's top wines.

Headed by Chief Judge Huon Hooke, the the Citi NSW Wine Awards is a showcase of the finest wine producers NSW has to offer and judging is conducted based on similar styles of wine, irrespective of the size of the producer. This means that boutique wine producers such as 201 are up against some of the powerhouses of the NSW wine industry.

"To be named alongside some of Australia's most iconic Semillons like Tyrrell's Vat 1 and Brokenwood's ILR Reserve is very exciting. Now all we can do is sit tight and wait until next week to see if we can beat them in the final judging" said Proprietor Geoff Schippers.


2012 Semi Semi awarded 90 points by James Halliday 5th August 2013
Australia's most highly regarded wine writer has continued his praise for our wines by awarding the 2012 Semi Semi 90 points in the 2014 Wine Companion and retaining our 4-star status.

2011 Sparkling Semillon finally disgorged 16th November 2012
201 is pleased to announce that, more than 18 months after it was first harvested, our first ever bin of 2011 Sparkling Semillon has now been disgorged in time for summer.

Made using the traditional "Méthode Champenoise", the base for our 2011 Sparkling Semillon is the same estate-grown Semillon which was recently awarded 93 points by respected wine critic James Halliday. Then, courtesy of the team at Peterson's Champagne House, it underwent secondary fermentation in the bottle before it was allowed to rest on yeast lees for 18 months to develop added complexity.

James Halliday, one of Australia's most respected wine critics, released his much anticipated 2013 Wine Companion last week (yes, in July 2012!) and it made for exciting reading for us at 201.

The first of two pleasant surprises was being awarded a massive 93 points for our 2011 Semillon - our highest score yet. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of trying it yet, James' tasting notes are:-

"Pale, bright straw-green; has all the hallmarks of high quality, young semillon, with a bouquet that is already expressive, the palate likewise; the flavours are in the Meyer lemon spectrum, gaining depth from lemongrass at one extreme, grapefruit at the other. The slightly higher than usual alcohol does help fill out the flavour. Drinking to 2021."

And secondly, the latest edition also saw 201 promoted from 3-star status to a 4-star winery for the first time in our short history. Defined as a "very good producer of wines with class and character", our new rating represents a significant jump in a single vintage not to mention a fantastic achievement in just our third vintage.


Coal Seam Gas mining in the Hunter Valley 2nd May 2011

Much has been discussed in the Hunter Valley of late regarding the issue of Coal Seam Gas mining, culminating in the recent 60 Minutes story on the issue of hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking". And only last night, SBS screened "Gasland", an American documentary on gas mining and the potentially disasterous effects of fracking. We can not afford to let the Hunter Valley, one of Australia's premier wine regions, suffer the same fate and we urge all wine drinkers to support our call to the NSW Government for action.

201 approved to build tourist accommodation
10th November 2009

201 has received DA approval from Cessnock Council to build a new 2 bedroom dwelling for holiday lettings. Due for completion in late 2010, it will provide tourists with modern self-contained accommodation sleeping up to 6 adults. Overlooking the dam on our 20 acre vineyard, it will feature a large deck looking out to the Brokenback Ranges.
